Teen Wolf Season 4 is bringing in Malia the were-coyote in a big way. The girl who spent most of her formative years living in the woods before she fell for Stiles and accepted humanity is now a full-fledged member of Scott’s pack. Actress Shelley Hennig explains to Zap2it how Malia’s awkward transformation works in this interview.

Zap2it: What’s coming for Malia in Season 4?
Shelley Hennig: The upcoming season will be Malia accepting being human. As you saw in 3B, she hated it, felt like a misfit and wanted to go back to what she knew. And she also had a lot of guilt. But she has a connection with Stiles. Coyotes are loyal and faithful, they choose one mate, and she chooses Stiles. And he’s reciprocated. You will see Stiles and Scott trying to help her adapt to a new world and also control her animal instincts — which will create some comedy and drama.

What does Malia bring to Team Scott?
Definitely loyalty. I played a lot, especially in the beginning how … One of my biggest things in high school was I never wanted to be bored. I always wanted to be entertained. I always wanted to find what was going on, and I played that in Malia — she didn’t like it when there wasn’t something to solve, because she really enjoys the action-packed, daily drama that this pack is introduced to. With that, she has a pack that she’s loyal to, helping her be an asset to the team.

I think she brings some comedy as well, because she can sound very abrasive and rude. But she doesn’t mean for it to come out that way. She’s just very honest and practical. And Stiles is always there to remind the pack that, ‘Hey, she’s learning.’ Her human skills aren’t that great.

What sorts of things will be difficult for Malia?
She’s not completely new at being human, but it’s definitely been awhile. She missed some very transformative years, and now she’s a pubescent teenager. She missed the whole puberty talk, the health classes — she went right into being a full-blown teenager. So there was a lot missing. And with that, the obvious — just missing class and not being in school. Which is where Lydia comes in, and she’s very helpful with her. She takes notes for Malia and has helped Malia stay afloat.

Is anything particularly difficult for her?
I think for the pack it’s her trying to come up with a filter and talk normally and not be so abrasive when she speaks. But I think, for Malia, her struggle becomes: “Even though I’m part of this pack, do I really belong here?'”The father thing becomes an issue, so there’s that.

With the Benefactor a looming presence in Season 4, how is Malia going to react to the danger?
It starts out as an adventure for Malia, and then s*** gets real real. She realizes how scary things can be, and you’ll even see her get vulnerable, which is a new thing for her dealing with. She doesn’t know what vulnerability is. She hasn’t been human for eight to 10 years! She will definitely be fearful at times, but she always turns to Stiles at times, and her Alpha, Scott.

How is the relationship between Malia and Stiles going in the new season?
Like I said, she’s loyal to him. He’s who she lives for, really. It sounds kind of desperate and pathetic in human terms — in high school, you shouldn’t put so much stock to someone of the opposite sex. You need to grow into who you are before you can fully be there for somebody else. But, that being said, this is a supernatural show. And Malia doesn’t have a family. Stiles has shown his loyalty to her, and there’s a huge connection there. So they will definitely be a great team. But in that — as in real life — there comes some turmoil here and there, things will come up that sort of puts them at a crossroads.

Is Malia able to maintain friendships with other girls?
I think even Lydia and Kira grow to just accept Malia for who she is and don’t take things personally. But I’m sure it’s frustrating for them at times — as it is for Malia, because she doesn’t understand why they’re looking at her like she’s crazy. It works both ways!

Why is Malia an important character for the new season?
The real answer is how relatable she is. She’s not great at school, she’s figuring out who her real father is, she’s in love, she’s a teenager and she’s pubescent and confused. I remember playing one scene where a tear came out of her eye, and I played it like “What’s that? I don’t do that!” We’re all like that as teenagers — we don’t want to be vulnerable but our hormones and emotions are just going crazy. So I think her biggest struggle is finding out what she can offer to this world.

This article contains spoilers!

1. New Characters Ahoy!
A host of new characters will be joining the cast. Not only have Arden Cho (Kira) and Shelley Hennig (Malia) been upped to season regulars, but Teen Wolf fans will also meet:

1a. Liam (Dylan Sprayberry), a handsome (obviously), cocky transfer student to Beacon Hills High. A freshman — played by an actual 15-year-old — Liam is rumored to be a bit of a troublemaker, who (SPOILER!!) becomes Scott’s first-ever beta. And we thought Derek liked ‘em young.

1b. Mason (Khylin Rambo) brings the representation as a gay athlete who is rumored to be recreating the Danny-and-Jackson friendship from Season 1 and 2 (shut up, you’re crying) and will be besties with Garrett (Mason Dye). He will also be involved with the supernatural element.

1c. Not much is known about Garrett, but we do know that he’s Mason’s best friend, and that he’ll be on the lacrosse team.

1d. The character of Brett (Cody Saintgue) was only announced on June 16, and so not much is known as of yet. All we know so far is that he was Liam’s rival at the school that Liam transferred away from. Looks like Liam and Brett will be rivals again for Rivals 2: The Rivalry! (Not apologizing for that.)

2. Kate Argent Is A Werejaguar
Remember Kate Argent (Jill Wagner)? Yeah, she’s a werejaguar, and her machinations have led to Derek being captured and tortured in some mysterious way — again. All Derek does is get captured. We’d applaud Teen Wolf‘s subversion of the damsel in distress trope, but we’re not so sure that’s their goal.

Anyway, we don’t know how Kate being a werejaguar is a thing, but we can probably assume that it won’t be explained other than the fact that she was scratched, not bitten — in our interview with Shelley Hennig, she revealed to HollywoodLife.com that Season 4 won’t delve into the explanation for the fact that she, despite being Peter’s daughter, is a werecoyote.

My proposed tagline for Season 5? Teen Wolf: Not Really Interested In The Finer Details Of Its Own Mythology.

3. Allison Is Dead, JR Bourne Is In Paris, And He Probably Left Isaac There
Not to reopen old wounds or anything, but, Allison (Crystal Reed) is still dead. Whomp. After her death, Chris (JR Bourne) and Isaac (Daniel Sharman) took off to Paris to get rid of the triskelion box which had the evil nogitsune fly (I DON’T KNOW) trapped inside. Daniel Sharman has left Teen Wolf in favor of The CW’s The Originals, and we can only assume that, hilariously, Chris left Isaac in Paris.

JR revealed in an exclusive interview with HollywoodLife.com that Chris will get called back to Beacon Hills after Scott asks for his help in dealing with The Benefactor and other related supernatural mayhem. Allison’s loss will be deeply felt throughout the season, as will the new code — “We protect those who cannot protect themselves.

4. Stalia Is A Thing — Sorry ‘Bout It
In Season 3B’s “Echo House,” Malia and Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) hooked up in the basement of the psychiatric institution they were both staying in. Not super romantic, not super healthy. But it waaaas sexy. Fight me about it. Dylan revealed at Alpha Con in Vienna that sex between the two was indeed implied, but that he wasn’t really down with filming anything more explicit than what ended up making it to air. That said, many Teen Wolf loyalists are unhappy with how their relationship has developed, and all sides have their very valid points.

However, their relationship continues in Season 4, as Malia considers Stiles to be her “mate,” and both creator Jeff Davis and the cast are enthusiastic about their relationship. Having seen the premiere, I can almost guarantee that even the Stalia haters will be down with Malia and her expanded role for the season, independent from her relationship with Stiles! Or they won’t, and they are free to come after me in the night.

5. The Big Bad For The Season Is The Benefactor
Finally, just to prepare you for the season arc, the Big Bad for Teen Wolf‘s fourth season is The Benefactor. He or she is behind a dead pool of assassins who have been hired to take out the supernatural residents of Beacon Hills. So… everybody, then? Every single person? We see a couple of baddies in the trailer above, including that scary mouthless thing and the floaty zombie thing — are they the supernaturals that are being taken out, or are they The Benefactor’s assassins?

As for The Benefactor, I’m thinking it’s an Argent. Gerard is still alive, after all, and we never saw a body after Chris stabbed Victoria (Eaddy Mays) in Season 2. To refresh your memory, she was bitten by Derek and it was the hunter code at the time to basically euthanize any hunter who had been bitten by an Alpha. However, as Chris’ knife went in, her eyes had turned yellow, and the change had already begun. Who’s to say she didn’t survive? If anybody has a grudge, it’s her. Furthermore, Eaddy is also still a huge part of Teen Wolf, appearing at many fan conventions.

Chris, too, may have gone off the deep end after Allison’s death — in our interview with JR, he mentioned that Chris is feeling very vengeful when he returns to Beacon Hills, and he used the same word to describe The Benefactor’s motivations. Coincidence?!?! Well, OK — very possibly.

So, HollywoodLifers, tell us: what are you most looking forward to this season? If it’s world-building, you might find yourself very disappointed. Do you see yourself sailing any new ships this season? Are you looking forward to Stalia, or will you be retreating into fanworks? Which new character are you most looking forward to meeting? Tell me all your thoughts below!

Buzzfeed wrote this awesome article filled with 17 (!) reasons to love Teen Wolf. If you’re not a fan, you will be after you’ve finished reading this article;

1. One word: bromance.
There’s nothing but love between Scott and Stiles — both on-camera and off!

2. Eye candy. So much eye candy.
No need to sugarcoat it. There’s a reason you can’t look away!

3. All eight of Derek’s abs.
Let’s face it: Derek Hale is in a league of his own.

4. Werewolves are cool. They just are.
They’re superstrong, they can shapeshift, and they sync up to the moon. What’s not to like?

5. It’s a lesson in mythology.
Alphas, Betas, Omegas… who knew there was so much

6. It’s actually scary.
When it’s not being funny or romantic, the show captures the classic horror genre perfectly!

7. It continues to surprise you!
Never a dull moment — this show keeps you on your toes!

8. Leading ladies who aren’t just love interests…
Wielding a bow and arrow and a katana, Allison Argent and Kira Yukimura play second fiddle to no one!

…and who are more than meets the eye.
Lydia Martin hides a brilliant intellect behind her “popular girl” facade.

9. It doesn’t shy away from sex.
Thanks, Teen Wolf!

10. And being gay is no big deal.
(Because being gay is no big deal…)

11. Watching Stiles steal the show.
Witty and sarcastic with a heart of gold, Stiles is the unexpected hero in this story. Oh, and he’s incredibly handsome.

12. Writers who know what they’re doing.
Clever, sharp, and slightly self-aware, the writing strikes the perfect balance needed for a show about teenage werewolves.

13. And secondary characters who add their own flavor.
Who doesn’t love a good Coach–Stiles standoff!

14. The actors are incredibly talented…
This cast immerses us completely in the world of Beacon Hills High.

15. …and incredibly goofy.
Watching these actors play around off-set is half the fun!

16. It makes us want to be part of a “pack”!
There’s nothing more heartwarming than watching Scott form his own pack of humans!

17. Did we mention Stiles already?
OK. But it bears repeating.

June 14, 2014

Season four of Teen Wolf is almost here.

Heartbroken over tragic losses, Scott, Stiles, Lydia and Kira return to a new semester of high school with more human worries than supernatural ones. Between helping their new friend Malia integrate back into society, dealing with the surprising resurrection of Kate Argent and the appearance of the Benefactor, let’s just say the gang at Beacon Hills has their hands full.

Access Hollywood sat down with “Teen Wolf” Creator Jeff Davis for more clarification on the show’s many mysteries and the gossip surrounding their upcoming season, which begins June 23 on MTV.

AccessHollywood.com: Four members of the cast departed Teen Wolf last season. What’s next?
Jeff Davis: Bringing in some new people, fresh faces for the show and kind of reinventing the story a little bit. We’ve lost some major cast members, people very close to our heart in the show. It’s hard, but it gives us a chance to try new things… liven things up and create new relationships and dynamics. We have great actors like Dylan Sprayberry, who is going to be playing Liam [and] Khylin Rambo who is going to play Mason.

Access: Story wise, what can we expect from season 4?
Jeff: A lot more death and destruction for our town Beacon Hills! There’s a central, core mystery. It’s all based around a hit list that our supernatural creatures find themselves on… We call it a season of assassins and bounty hunters. There will be a lot more danger for our characters.

Access: Do you have a favorite episode from the new season, and what is it about?
Jeff: It’s hard to pick. Probably my favorite episode is the first, so far, because it’s the most complete edit we’ve done. I’m seeing it in its most final version and it’s finally beginning to being realized. I’m usually partial to last episodes.

Access: Exciting. What’s the social media reaction been?
Jeff: It’s been really amazing. We keep going up every year in Twitter, in Tumblr, the number of impressions on Facebook. It’s kind of incredible how important social media has become for shows like ours, especially shows on cable tv that don’t necessarily get the huge media push that [shows on] broadcast networks do. I love hearing the stories about [how] people are connecting on Twitter about the show.

Access: Will you be live tweeting?
Jeff: I don’t Tweet anymore because I think it interferes too much with the writing, but we always get the cast to do it!
