If you thought Tuesday’s Teen Wolf felt more like a series finale than a midseason ender, there’s a good reason for that. Jeff Davis sat down with TV Line to discuss the show’s mid-season finale and more;

“We definitely wanted to close the book on the high school chapter of their lives,” executive producer Jeff Davis tells TVLine. “This season was really about honoring the character of Stiles. We knew we wouldn’t have Dylan O’Brien full-time, and then we had him even less once his accident happened. So there was a bit of behind-the-scenes trickery there. I love when a season feels like it’s told a full story, a complete story. Every season finale has felt like a series finale to me.”

Before we continue picking apart the episode, here’s a quick recap of the main events (in addition to the defeat of Mr. Douglas and the Ghost Riders): Stiles returned to the land of the living, where he reunited with (and kissed!) Lydia; Argent and Melissa shared a kiss of their own; Malia and Peter had their first real heart-to-heart moment as father and daughter; Stilinski and Lydia teamed up to send Claudia back to… wherever the hell she came from; and the senior pack members celebrated the end of high school. (Stiles is off to a pre-FBI program at George Washington University, while Lydia is heading to MIT — as a junior! — and Scott is attending UC Davis.)

Unfortunately, Davis can’t say how Stiles and Lydia’s (long-overdue) kiss will affect the pair moving forward, nor can he confirm the amount of Dylan O’Brien we’ll actually see in the final 10 episodes. Instead, he offers up this Cheshire Cat-like musing on the couple’s finale moment: “It all has to do with friendship and romance, where someone finally says ‘I love you’ after it’s been boiling up inside for years.”
Speaking of what’s coming up, Davis says Season 6B jumps ahead “a few months” and will explore what it means to be an outsider.
“It’s something new, but also old,” he explains. “Scott and his supernatural friends become pariahs once again. They’re feared and hunted. It’s very much a season of fear. Our inspiration was H.P. Lovecraft, so you’re going to be seeing a lot of dark horror in the next season. We have some really disgusting stuff coming up.”

There’s also an interesting future in store for the show’s newest — and my personal favorite — pairing, Argent and Melissa.
“We’d been flirting with the idea of Stilinski and Melissa,” Davis says, “but one of our rules in the writers’ room is to go the unexpected route — and putting her with Argent felt unexpected. Then it started to feel natural. Like, they’re really good together. I was like, ‘Are we doing this? It’s the last season. Let’s do it.’ In 6B, things are going to get ever more awkward. We love awkward romances, inspired by my own life.”

Spoiler alert: This post contains plot points from the January 31 winter finale of Teen Wolf.

Teen Wolf‘s season 6 winter finale held nothing back: Scott and his pack went toe-to-toe with the Ghost Riders while Stiles’ return gave fans moments they’ve waited years for (namely, one very passionate kiss). By the end of the hour, the Wild Hunt was gone, and Scott, Stiles, and Lydia were all headed off to college.

As for what that means for the future — the show has 10 more episodes to wrap up its story – EW spoke with showrunner Jeff Davis about the finale and what comes next.

On that Melissa-Argent kiss: When it comes to taking this friendship to the next level, Davis wasn’t always on board. “It’s actually something that I fought for a while,” he says. “Some of the writers really liked it and I was skeptical of it quite a bit. We hadn’t been planning it for a long time, but this season we were like, ‘Alright, last season of Teen Wolf, are we going to go for it? Let’s go for it!’”

Whether there’s an actual relationship in their future, however, remains to be seen. “There’s more to come in 6B,” Davis says. “There’s some awkwardness, some, ‘Did we really just do that?’ It’s definitely one of our more awkward romances.”

On the end of the Wild Hunt: The Wild Hunt is gone… but that doesn’t mean it can’t still play a role in what comes next. As Davis puts it, “There is a thread that finds its way into 6B. Everything is cause-and-effect in our world and we’ll discover that the events of 6B couldn’t have happened without the Wild Hunt coming through Beacon Hills.”

On Peter and Malia: In order to snap Peter out of his supernatural trance, Malia had to play the “dad” card, and after a season of watching the once selfish Peter put his daughter first, it felt like the two of them took a real step forward in their relationship. And according to Davis, “Fatherhood changes people, sometimes for the better.” Most importantly, he says, “Peter will be back in 6B and we’ll be exploring more of their relationship. I like the two of those actors together and they obviously have fun together, so oftentimes when we as the writers notice that two people are good together and they clearly enjoy acting together, we write more scenes for them. It was a joy having Ian Bohen back on set. No one else can say a line like, ‘Nobody likes a Nazi,’ with that kind of flair.”

On that Stydia kiss: After six long years, Stiles and Lydia finally locked lips, and not because he was having a panic attack. Furthermore, they’re in love, which sadly, is still no guarantee that we’ll get to see the two of them together in the final 10 episodes. At this point, Dylan O’Brien isn’t confirmed to return, and according to Davis, Stiles’ future “remains to be seen.” The question, as Davis puts it, is: “Is this the end of Stiles’ character with Teen Wolf?”

On where we go from here: Following an hour that felt oddly like a series finale, particularly with the full-circle ending, the question becomes: What now? “In 6B, it all goes back to Scott’s character and where Scott would be going from here, finally going from teen wolf to man wolf. It’s really his evolution as a character, from a naive lovestruck innocent kid to the leader of a supernatural underground, Beacon Hills. 6B is very much about Scott and his friends becoming outsiders again, becoming pariahs, and about fear of the other, fear of the outsider, which is also a reflection of our current cultural political climate.”

As for how Liam and the rest of the current high schoolers will factor in, Davis reveals that the show will still be set in Beacon Hills. “It’s basically predicated on a new element of the supernatural, a new danger that arrives to keep Scott and his friends in Beacon Hills just a little bit longer. One of Scott’s greatest fears is that he will never be able to leave Beacon Hills as sort of a protector of the supernatural and can he go off and have a life of his own? So we’re going to explore some of that.”

Teen Wolf will return for its final 10 episodes in summer 2017.

After six seasons and countless mysteries, Teen Wolf has finally answered the biggest question of all: What is Stiles’ real name? EW.com sat down with Jeff Davis who finally explains Stiles’ real name;

During Tuesday’s episode, Sheriff Stilinski spends most of the hour doing nothing more than remembering. Most importantly, he remembers that he has a son. Then, he remembers that his wife is actually dead. And from there, it’s a flood of emotions as he pieces together Stiles’ life, from the moment he got his Jeep to the first moment Teen Wolf fans met him as he dragged Scott out into the woods to find a dead body.

By episode’s end, Stilinski remembers everything, and in the moment he shows up at Scott’s house to update everyone, he says, “I have a son. His name is Mieczyslaw Stilinski.” Stilinski goes on to say that Stiles couldn’t pronounce his name when he was young, so the closest he got was “mischief,” which quickly became a nickname that Claudia gave him. Whether Stiles’ name will play into the rest of the season remains to be seen, but regardless, it’s a big moment for fans.

EW asked Teen Wolf showrunner Jeff Davis about the inspiration for the long-awaited name drop. “A few years ago, I knew I would have to actually reveal Stiles’s name at some point,” Davis tells EW exclusively. “I was looking for a Polish name that was incredibly difficult to both spell and pronounce. Mieczyslaw sounded like ‘mischief.’ It seemed like a perfect word to describe Stiles. Both as a mischievous child and equally misbehaved adult.”

Teen Wolf airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.
